BIOGRAPHY

Joe Hamm is an Associate Professor in Michigan State University's School of Criminal Justice, Environmental Science and Policy Program, and Department of Political Science (by courtesy). He holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Nebraska Lincoln ('14) and a Master of Legal Studies from the University of Nebraska College of Law ('11).  Joe's work investigates the intersection of government and the public which he studies through the lens of trust. His work contributes to our collective understanding of how governance actors can best monitor, build, and protect public trust through a variety of engagement strategies, and has been funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the British Academy.

To ensure that these insights translate into practical impacts, Joe works closely with a variety of national, state, and local environmental, health, and justice agencies. In particular, Joe currently serves as the Community Engagement Core lead for MSU's Superfund Research Program where he collaborates with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to build community trust in the environmental health context. Joe also contributes his expertise as editor in chief of the Journal of Trust Research; on the board of the First International Network of Trust; supervisor of the Teaching, Researching, and Understanding the Social Science of Trust Lab (an interdisciplinary incubator for PhD student-led research on trust); and graduate program director of MSU's Environmental Science and Policy Programdirector.
