Ecosystems and Ecosystem Services

Biogeochemistry Environmental Research Initiative (BERI)
http://beri.espp.msu.edu/
Biogeochemistry, which lies at the nexus of biology, geology, and chemistry, is an integrative science that has emerged from the growing need to understand how living organisms interact with physical and chemical aspects of their environment. BERI fosters, coordinates and enhances research activities in all aspects of biogeochemistry.

Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID)
http://www.casid.msu.edu/
CASID promotes and coordinates the study of issues related to international development from the perspective of the social sciences and liberal arts.

Center for Global Change and Earth Observations (CGCEO)
http://www.globalchange.msu.edu/
CGCEO's mission is to foster interdisciplinary approaches for understanding global change at all scales using the tools of both the social and bio-physical sciences. The Center is also committed to applying its research and expertise to inform public and private decision-making on critical global environmental change issues.

Center for Integrative Toxicology (CIT)
http://cit.msu.edu/
The CIT builds upon recognized research strength on the health and environmental effects of pollutants. With over 50 affiliated faculty who are distinguished in a wide range of scientific disciplines, the center offers an innovative and highly integrative environment for research, teaching, and graduate school education in toxicology.

Center for Microbial Ecology (CME)
http://www.cme.msu.edu/
The Center has major programs in research, graduate education, industrial outreach, and educational outreach designed to create new knowledge, facilitate the dissemination of knowledge to the industrial and governmental sectors, help to develop a well-trained work force knowledgeable in microbial ecology, and increase scientific literacy among K-12 students.

Center for Research on College Science Teaching and Learning (CRCSTL)
https://www.msu.edu/~crcstl/
CRCSTL promotes MSU science faculty's involvement in research on instructional design, implementation and assessment of student learning outcomes in college science.

Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS)
http://www.csis.msu.edu/
CSIS's mission is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales.

Center for Water Sciences (CWS)
http://www.cws.msu.edu/
The mission of CWS is to advance scientific research and knowledge for understanding, protecting, and restoring water resources and their sustainable use by humans and ecosystems around the Great Lakes and the world. Our interdisciplinary scientific teams of MSU faculty and students investigate and provide solutions to current, emerging, and future environmental problems that face our local, national, and global water systems.

Computational Ecology and Visualization Laboratory (CEVL)
http://www.cevl.msu.edu/
We facilitate the linkage between ecology and computational technology. We encourage faculty and students to discuss, initiate research and develop applications to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of ecological phenomena at large scales. Our laboratory facilities enable faculty and students to use mathematical models, conduct spatial analysis and develop visualization systems to address local, regional and global ecological issues.

Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior Program (EEBB)
http://eebb.msu.edu/
The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior is a multidisciplinary program of study and research leading to a Master's specialization or dual-major Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior and one of the traditional disciplines offered by EEBB participating departments.

Environmental Statistics and Modeling Initiative
http://environmetrics.espp.msu.edu/
We are a group within the Environmental Science and Policy Program at MSU that has been brought together to explore and evaluate the program of environmental statistics and modeling at MSU.

Global Observatory for Ecosystem Services (GOES)
http://www.goes.msu.edu/
Scientists at GOES use geospatial information and technologies to support domestic and international development, focusing on sustainable agriculture and natural resource management. Our focus is on the use of earth observing systems to monitor and quantify ecosystem services, particularly from forests.

Invasive Species Initiative
http://www.invasivespecies.msu.edu/
As a hub of international travel and commerce, Michigan and the Great Lakes region are particularly vulnerable to invasive species. Michigan State University has a diverse faculty and staff with internationally recognized expertise and programs on invasive species research, education and outreach.

Kellogg Biological Station (KBS)
http://www.kbs.msu.edu/
KBS is MSU’s largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. KBS's mission is to develop programs in research, education and extension directed toward a comprehensive understanding of natural and managed ecosystems and the conservation of natural resources.

Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program
http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/
The Kellogg Biological Station LTER Program studies the ecology of intensive field crop ecosystems as part of a national network of LTER sites established by the National Science Foundation. The Network supports research that provides a better understanding of ecological phenomena in both natural and managed ecosystems.

Knight Center for Environmental Journalism
http://www.ej.msu.edu/
The Knight Center, at MSU’s School of Journalism trains student and professional journalists to cover the environment. The program offers numerous classes and professional workshops for the study and practice of environmental journalism. It also maintains the Meeman Archives, a collection of more than 1,500 outstanding environmental journalism articles.

Mega Project Development in Amazonia (MPDA): Examining the Environmental and Social Dynamics
http://www.geo.msu.edu/mpda/
The focus of this program of research is to examine the environmental and social impacts of Mega-project development in the upper and lower Amazon basin. This will be a multi-disciplinary endeavor, and one of the first conducting a cross-basin study in the Amazon.

Remote Environment Assessment Laboratory
http://www.real.msu.edu/
Our goal is to investigate the relationship between in situ observations and landscape level processes in order to better understand ecosystem dynamics.

Sustainable Michigan Endowed Project (SMEP)
http://www.smep.msu.edu/
SMEP provides a venue for ongoing scholarly reflection and critique on the sustainability of Michigan, as well as seed grants for sustainability research from a Michigan state-level perspective. SMEP also provides a venue for on-going, long-term sustainability discourse with the goal of influencing the intellectual culture within MSU, and particularly the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
