MSU Research Centers with an Environmental Focus

Much of the interdisciplinary work on environmental science and policy at MSU is carried out by centers, institutes and laboratories. They vary in their missions, scope and organizational structure but are a vital part of the resources of MSU devoted to the environment.

Center for Advancing Microbial Risk Assessment
http://www.camra.msu.edu/
CAMRA has twin missions. The first is a technical mission to have developed critically reviewed and interpreted sets of models, tools and information that will be used in a credible risk assessment framework to reduce or eliminate health impacts from deliberate use of biological agents of concern (BAC) as bioterrorists agents in the indoor and outdoor environment. The second mission is to build a national network for MRA for knowledge management, learning and transfer, for the community of scientists, community of students via educational programs and community of professionals in the field and in our communities.

Center for Advanced Study in International Development
http://www.casid.msu.edu/
CASID promotes and coordinates the study of issues related to international development from the perspective of the social sciences and liberal arts.

Center for Global Change and Earth Observations
http://www.globalchange.msu.edu/
The overarching goal of CGCEO is to contribute to the understanding of the interrelations among human, land, and climate systems in an international context, as reflected in MSU's Boldness by Design. Building on existing strength in interdisciplinary approaches to understand the social processes, land use and land cover patterns and processes, and environmental impacts and responses at regional to global scales.

Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability
http://www.csis.msu.edu/
The center's mission is to develop and maintain a center of excellence that integrates ecology with socioeconomics, demography, and other disciplines for ecological sustainability from local, national, to global scales.

Center for Water Sciences
http://www.cws.msu.edu/
The mission of The Center for Water Sciences (CWS) at MSU is to advance scientific research and knowledge for understanding, protecting, and restoring water resources and their sustainable use by humans and ecosystems around the Great Lakes and the world. Our interdisciplinary scientific teams of MSU faculty and students investigate and provide solutions to current, emerging, and future environmental problems that face our local, national, and global water systems.

Composite Materials and Structures Center
http://www.egr.msu.edu/cmsc/
The Center conducts research on environmentally benign materials and processes focused largely on the use of sustainable biobased materials to replace petroleum based materials.

Computational Ecology and Visualization Laboratory
http://www.cevl.msu.edu/
We were established to facilitate the linkage between ecology and computational technology. Our goal is to encourage faculty and students to discuss, initiate research and develop applications to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of ecological phenomena at large scales. Our laboratory facilities enable faculty and students to use mathematical models, conduct spatial analysis and develop visualization systems to address local, regional and global ecological issues.

Institute for Food Laws and Regulations
http://www.iflr.msu.edu/
The Institute is dedicated to providing a global perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the international food trade through our Study Abroad Program, Internet Food Law Certificate Program, workshops, lectures and seminars.

Institute of International Health
http://www.msu.edu/unit/iih/
The IIH is a focal point at MSU for facilitating faculty and student research and academic interests in international health and for international health projects overseas. The IIH works with the health-related colleges, as well as with social and agricultural scientists, nutritionists, and a variety of interdisciplinary units, to foster and coordinate research, education, and development at the international level.

Institute for Public Policy and Social Research
http://www.ippsr.msu.edu/
The Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) applies research to pressing public policy issues and builds problem-solving relationships between the academic and policymaker communities. To this end the Institute promotes and conduct research on issues of public policy; provides survey research services; produces public policy education and training programs; and initiates discussion of society's most pressing needs among diverse audiences.

Institute of Water Research
http://www.iwr.msu.edu/
The Institute of Water Research at Michigan State University (MSU) is responsible for coordinating research and educational programs on surface water and groundwater quality and quantity. The Institute addresses land and water issues and strengthens MSU's efforts in nontraditional education, outreach, and interdisciplinary studies.

Kellogg Biological Station
http://www.kbs.msu.edu/
KBS is Michigan State University's largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. The 4,000-acre station includes Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, Kellogg Farm, the Kellogg Biological Laboratories, the KBS Conference Center, Extension and Outreach offices and the Lux Arbor Reserve. KBS' mission is to develop programs in research, education and extension directed toward a comprehensive understanding of natural and managed ecosystems and the conservation of natural resources. World renowned for its contributions to ecological science and evolutionary biology, the Station is home to one of the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research sites, and is committed to science and ecology education, conservation of natural resources and sustainable agriculture research and demonstration.

Knight Center for Environmental Journalism
http://www.ej.msu.edu/
The Knight Center trains students and professional journalists to cover the environment. The program offers numerous classes and professional workshops for the study and practice of environmental journalism. Faculty conduct research and attract environmental experts and journalists from around the world as guest lecturers. The program maintains the Meeman Archives, a collection of more than 1,500 outstanding environmental journalism articles from the past 20 years.

Long Term Ecological Research Site
http://www.lter.kbs.msu.edu
The Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Site is part of the national LTER Network established by the U.S. National Science Foundation in 1980. The Network is made up of 20 sites at which long-term research in ecology and environmental biology provides a better understanding of ecological phenomena in both natural and managed ecosystems. Research at the KBS LTER site is directed towards understanding ecological interactions underlying the productivity of both annual and perennial field crops. One of the organizing questions of the KBS LTER Project centers on the role of biodiversity in the agricultural landscape, and in particular on the functional significance of diversity with respect to ecosystem function.

National Center for Food Safety and Toxicology
http://foodsafe.msu.edu/index.html
The National Food Safety & Toxicology Center is committed to reducing food-related disease on a global level, through research, education and service. This is achieved by fostering collaborations across a full spectrum of disciplines both within and beyond the university, and by developing partnerships with government, industry, consumer representatives and other key stakeholders.

Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Science
Research and Outreach Services

http://www.rsgis.msu.edu/
The mission of RS&GIS is to provide state-of-the-art remote sensing (RS), global positioning system (GPS), geographic information science (GIS) and cartographic services to the MSU campus, the State of Michigan, and other agencies. They also provide outreach instruction and technology transfer in the geospatial fields of RS, GPS, GIS, and cartography. RS&GIS conducts research grants and contract work for on-campus and off-campus units.
